I’ve gotten graduation-related sales pitches mailed to my house addressed to my “Parents/Guardians” from both @CMLIFE and @cmualumni in the past week.
-
Assuming the home/permanent address of a graduate is their parent’s is probably OK normally, but the university definitely has enough data at their disposal to realize that’s probably not the case for me.
-
I’m: - A full-time employee of the University - A graduate student - 33 Years old - Married, with children
-
All of those things individually make it less likely that what I list as my permanent address is my parent’s address to one extent or another, and taken together make it extremely unlikely.

This is how naïve targeting falls down, and is a perfect example of how organizations need to use all the data available to them when making decisions.
